The Things by Peter Watts is a unique take on John W. Campbell’s, ‘Who Goes There?’ Told from the perspective of the alien entity, the reader is presented with a creature that sees existence and life differently. The thing finds humans perplexing and struggles to understand their individuality and the concept of a single consciousness. It integrates with its hosts, consuming them, to understand them better. But when humans retaliate in self-defence, the thing is puzzled by their hostile reaction.
